Business Intelligence: Human Rights and Compliance Assessment for Pharmaceutical Company in Cambodia

The Situation

A major pharmaceuticals company commissioned Anthesis to assess the compliance, financial crime, labour, and human rights risks associated with a Cambodian importer and distributor of pharmaceuticals.

As part of the report, Anthesis provided an overview of the pharmaceutical sector and human rights landscape in Cambodia. The company had a negligible public domain footprint, and the pharmaceuticals sector in Cambodia is known to be high-risk for corruption, with processes for obtaining authorisations and distribution contracts often subject to bribes.

Our Solutions

Despite the high-risk environment, conversations with trusted sources in Cambodia revealed that the company was not known to be involved in corrupt practices or human rights abuses, unlike some other healthcare sector businesses.

Anthesis recommended mitigation strategies to address workplace safety and supply chain oversight to ensure compliance and reduce risks.

ESG Due Diligence for a Real Estate Company

The Situation

We conducted a comprehensive ESG review of publicly available information related to the subject and its subsidiaries. This included searches of court, corporate, and regulatory filings in Australia and the UK; social media, press sources, media archives, and blogs in multiple languages; social and business networking platforms; proprietary, commercial, and legal data aggregators; and sanctions and watch lists.

Our goal was to assess the target’s ESG risks using a three-pronged approach: identifying material ESG topics using the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) materiality finder, establishing public disclosures on these issues, and reviewing independent sources to evaluate the company’s track record.

Our Solutions

To conduct the GRESB gap analysis, we reviewed the client’s policies, procedures, and ESG performance data detailed in the Virtual Data Room, supplemented by an interview with the client’s director of operations for Asia.

We compared the client’s data to the maximum possible scoring outlined within GRESB’s official scoring guidance and standards documents.

Additionally, we analyzed human and labor rights risks in the materials supply chain of a listed real estate firm by reviewing sourcing policies, mapping supply chains, and conducting public domain checks on main suppliers. Sources for this research included publications by international organizations such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and UN Environment Programme, reports by international NGOs like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, academic publications, industry reports, blogs, and social media.

Climate Risk and ASRS Readiness for Sussan Group

The Situation

The Sussan Group, comprising the retail brands Sussan, Sportsgirl and Suzanne Grae, operates across the Australian market selling clothing, accessories, sleepwear and beauty products. With upcoming mandatory climate-related financial reporting requirements (ASRS AASB S2), the Group sought expert support to prepare for their inaugural climate disclosures and strengthen their emissions reporting processes.

Our Solutions

Validating SBTi Net Zero Targets for LIPTON Teas & Infusions https://www.anthesisgroup.com/au/case-studies/lipton-teas-and-infusions-sbt-net-zero/ Wed, 12 Feb 2025 09:19:40 +0000 https://anthesisglobal.wpenginepowered.com/au/?post_type=case-study&p=56785

Validating SBTi Net Zero Targets for LIPTON Teas & Infusions

The Situation

LIPTON Teas and Infusions is the world’s largest tea business, with world-class brands that are household names such as Lipton, Pukka, TAZO, T2 and PG Tips. The company has production sites in four continents and a presence in more than 100 countries.

Anthesis Group was engaged to complete a GHG inventory, and support LIPTON Teas and Infusions in the establishment of their Science Based Targets (including Forest, Land and Agriculture – FLAG targets).

Alongside this, Anthesis worked with LIPTON Teas and Infusions to develop a decarbonisation roadmap, which would facilitate understanding of target feasibility, and identification of the opportunities for greatest impact to achieve an ambitious net-zero target across its entire value chain by 2040.

Our Solutions

Anthesis provided:

  • A full GHG inventory for scope 1, 2, 3 and FLAG emissions.
  • Support and guidance throughout the SBTi submission & target validation process (including FLAG targets).
  • Identification and quantification of decarbonisation levers in sessions with Anthesis experts from agri-food, packaging, manufacturing, supply chain, change management, and climate alongside LIPTON Teas and Infusions’ supply-chain, research and innovation, and manufacturing teams.
  • An assessment of LIPTON Teas and Infusions’ overall business model to identify barriers and opportunities.
  • A reduction roadmap to model the impact of decarbonisation measures.
  • A change impact assessment to identify internal and external stakeholder groups that would be critical to successful implementation of decarbonisation measures.

Impacts of the Project

The high-level reduction roadmap that was developed is ambitious but remains realistic and pragmatic. It balances the need to lay the foundations for a long-term business transformation with the need for rapid decarbonisation to meet LIPTON Teas and Infusions’ now validated near-term and long-term science-based, net-zero targets.

LIPTON Teas and Infusions is now focused on early intervention to decouple growth from GHG emissions, reducing business constraints and introducing stretch goals.

By establishing a Science Based Target, and executing its reduction roadmap, LIPTON Teas and Infusions can lead not only in the market but also set a precedent, leading by example for its suppliers.

Anthesis was an invaluable partner in helping us, as a newly independent company, chart our path to net zero. Having our science-based targets subsequently validated has provided crucial confirmation that we are making meaningful progress.

Preparing Great Southern Bank for ASRS and Climate-Related Financial Disclosures https://www.anthesisgroup.com/au/case-studies/preparing-great-southern-bank-for-asrs-and-climate-related-financial-disclosures/ Mon, 06 Jan 2025 03:32:30 +0000 https://anthesisglobal.wpenginepowered.com/au/?post_type=case-study&p=56687

Preparing Great Southern Bank for ASRS and Climate-Related Financial Disclosures

Great Southern Bank aligns with ASRS, advancing transparency and sustainability commitments.

The Situation

Great Southern Bank, one of Australia’s largest customer-owned banks, serves over 380,000 Australians. As it grows, the bank has committed to reducing its environmental impact, acknowledging its role in creating a sustainable future. Since achieving Climate Active certification in 2021, the bank has worked with Anthesis to measure, reduce, and offset operational emissions. However, the challenge of measuring “financed emissions” from its lending and investment portfolios required deeper analysis and alignment with new legislation, such as the mandatory climate-related financial disclosures to the Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards (ASRS).

Our Solutions

Anthesis supported Great Southern Bank with a gap analysis and roadmap to meet ASRS requirements. This included a detailed opportunity assessment and updating the Bank’s Climate Transition Plan in line with ASRS and the UK Transition Plan Taskforce framework. Using PCAF guidance, Anthesis assessed the Bank’s portfolio emissions across lending and investment activities, including mortgages, corporate bonds, and business loans. Additional support was provided to enhance the Bank’s TCFD statement with science-based targets validated by SBTi, while also offering insight into disclosure gaps and strategies to close them.

Impacts of the Project

Great Southern Bank became the first customer-owned bank in Australia to publish a TCFD statement, leading the sector in environmental disclosure. Enhanced insights into carbon intensity per asset class and sector enabled the Bank to guide strategic decision-making on risk management and product development. By partnering with Anthesis, the Bank continues to align with ASRS and advance its sustainability commitments, including setting validated science-based targets and developing strategies to reduce financed emissions.

Tennis Australia: Advancing Sustainability and Reducing Emissions  https://www.anthesisgroup.com/au/case-studies/tennis-australia-advancing-sustainability-and-reducing-emissions/ Mon, 06 Jan 2025 01:52:32 +0000 https://anthesisglobal.wpenginepowered.com/au/?post_type=case-study&p=56684

Tennis Australia: Advancing Sustainability and Reducing Emissions

Tennis Australia reduces emissions with forward-thinking strategies and innovative partnerships

The Situation

Tennis Australia, as the governing body for tennis in Australia, is committed to reducing the environmental impacts of its tournaments. Recognising transport, energy, and resource use as key contributors, and aligned with the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework (S4CA), Tennis Australia sought expert assistance to measure and understand its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This included analysing its organisational carbon footprint and that of marquee events like the Australian Open.

Our Solutions

Anthesis supported Tennis Australia to develop a comprehensive GHG inventory, including:

  • Defining the full Australian Open emissions boundary, including pre- and post-event activities.
  • Measuring and analysing emissions data, broken down by source (Scopes 1, 2, and 3).
  • Identifying resource consumption patterns and emissions trends across consecutive years.
  • Improving the robustness of data collection and reporting aligned with S4CA goals.
  • Modelling scenarios, from business-as-usual to ambitious reduction trajectories, with targeted actions.

This work informed the “Maximum Play, Minimum Footprint” strategy, focusing on three pillars: Reducing Emissions, Consuming Responsibly, and Future-Proofing Tennis.

Impacts of the Project

With the support of Anthesis, Tennis Australia has made significant progress in understanding and reducing its environmental footprint year on year. At the Australian Open 2022, they partnered with Samsara to address plastic waste, ensuring better waste management practices. For the Australian Open 2023, they collaborated with cleantech startup Calyx to measure and reduce the environmental impact of food items served at the event. Additionally, they launched the “Towards Love” apparel line, which prioritises sustainable design and production practices, minimising the impact of merchandise.

These initiatives reflect Tennis Australia’s commitment to reducing emissions, improving sustainability practices, and fostering partnerships that create lasting positive environmental impact.

GoodWeave Wage Data Collection Tool https://www.anthesisgroup.com/au/case-studies/goodweave-wage-data-collection-tool/ Thu, 14 Nov 2024 01:24:17 +0000 https://anthesisglobal.wpenginepowered.com/au/?post_type=case-study&p=56586

GoodWeave Wage Data Collection Tool

The development of detailed auditor guidelines and a best-in-class wage collection tool

The Situation

GoodWeave International is a non-profit organisation working to stop child labour in global supply chains. They partner with companies and local producer communities to bring visibility to hidden supply chains, protect workers’ rights, provide assurance that products are free of child, forced, and bonded labor, and help restore childhoods.

To advance their positive social impacts, GoodWeave partnered with Anthesis to develop a wage collection tool. This tool converts piece-rate payments into legal minimum wage and benchmarks them against living wage in the carpet industries of India and Nepal.

The project was divided into two phases, with the second still underway.

Our Solutions

The project to date involved a thorough desktop analysis to identify existing best-practice piece-rate calculation methods, minimum wage laws by region, and living wage benchmarks in India and Nepal.

Anthesis used this research context to design, program, and develop a user-friendly wage calculation tool which enables the comparison of piece-rate wage payments against minimum and living wage benchmarks at a national and state-based level. Anthesis went through several rounds of design, development, and testing with GoodWeave to create the functional, user-tested tool. It needed to be useable in the field but also robust enough to handle complex economies and networks around formal and informal rug making in South Asia.

Anthesis developed guidelines for in-country auditors, detailing efficient and effective methods for assessing wages during on-site audits. These guidelines included details of how to use the wage tool, specific questions for auditors to ask interviewees, methods for verifying wage collection, and suggested steps for compliance and corrective action.

Impacts of the Project

The project resulted in the development of detailed auditor guidelines and a best-in-class wage collection tool to strengthen data collection, evaluation, and benchmarking against living and minimum wage standards in different parts of India and Nepal.

The output has provided GoodWeave with robust tools and guidelines that can be refined over time and potentially expanded to other regions and wage benchmarks.

The team at Anthesis were easy to work with and came with deep human rights expertise. The tool they built for us has expanded our wage calculation abilities in India and Nepal and will have a positive impact on our mission to end child labour and deepen our knowledge of workers’ wages in the carpet industry.

Viva Energy Climate Risk & Opportunity Assessment and TNFD Scoping

Future-focused Viva Energy strengthens its climate risk assessment, ensuring readiness for upcoming disclosure requirements and nature-related risks.

28 October 2024

The Situation

Viva Energy Australia is a leading energy company supplying fuels, lubricants, solvents, and bitumen across various industries in Australia. Anthesis has been a trusted advisor to Viva Energy for many years, supporting the organisation with energy assessments and NGERs reporting assistance.

In 2024, in response to new mandatory disclosure requirements, Viva Energy sought Anthesis’s support to refresh its climate risk and opportunity assessment. The focus was on practical application, usability, and ease of implementation across the business. Viva Energy also required assistance in preparing for nature-related risk reporting under the Taskforce for Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD).

Our Solutions

Anthesis began by updating Viva Energy’s assessment framework and climate scenarios using global data. The qualitative assessment covered climate-related risks and opportunities across all business functions. Fact-finding workshops with key stakeholders, along with review sessions, were conducted to test and validate the draft assessment. Additionally, Anthesis completed a TNFD scoping study, including a discovery workshop and a comprehensive scoping report.

Anthesis were extremely professional and knowledgeable and effectively led our team in our updated Climate Risk and Opportunity Assessment. The final deliverables were of high quality and user friendly. Plus their team was great to work with.

Landcom – Integrating Carbon and Biodiversity into Land Development https://www.anthesisgroup.com/au/case-studies/landcom-integrating-carbon-and-biodiversity-into-land-development/ Tue, 03 Sep 2024 05:30:39 +0000 https://anthesisglobal.wpenginepowered.com/au/?post_type=case-study&p=56284

Landcomm: Integrating Carbon and Biodiversity into Land Development

Landcom took an innovative approach to understand how to mitigate its climate and nature impacts by utilising its own land assets.

The Situation

Landcom is a state-owned corporation mandated to deliver affordable and sustainable communities within NSW.

It has committed to carbon neutrality and ultimately pursuing nature positive outcomes, meeting and exceeding obligations under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 (NSW) (BC Act). In pursuing these objectives, it is vital to Landcom that its program of action is of high integrity and inspires innovative pathways for the land development sector, whilst also creating benefits for the communities served by Landcom.

Landcom sought to take a proactive approach in mitigating its climate and nature impact by utilising its own land assets. The aim was to explore opportunities for generating carbon credits and biodiversity offsets, thereby turning environmental responsibilities into tangible benefits.

Our Solutions

To address this challenge, Anthesis collaborated with Australian Wetlands Consulting (AWC). Together, they combined market leadership in carbon and biodiversity offsets expertise to propose an innovative approach to Landcom to meet its objectives.

The project involved developing a prioritisation matrix to demonstrate suitable schemes, including carbon, biodiversity offset, and other nature schemes, that could apply to Landcom’s land portfolio.

Anthesis and AWC proposed to tailor this matrix into a Carbon and Biodiversity Values Screening Tool to provide a process overview. This tool was carefully aligned with Landcom’s existing processes and tools, building on current practices rather than creating additional ones.

“While Landcom’s primary function is to develop land to deliver affordable and sustainable housing, 57% of our portfolio is actually comprised of habitat, waterways and water bodies and landscaped areas. By having an appropriate screening tool at the outset of every project, we can seek to better accommodate nature, while promoting climate positive outcomes, at each of our communities.”
